7 citizens appointed to serve on Moorings Committee

Meetings will be open to the public

Seven citizens have been appointed to serve on the town's ad-hoc Moorings Committee to determine whether Winthrop needs a mooring ordinance and, if so, what it should include.

The Town Council on Monday, July 24, appointed the following residents to the committee:

  • Barbara Brosius
  • Matthew Colpitts
  • Dwight Doughty
  • Michael Ketchen
  • Lynn Reed
  • Matt Steele
  • Jim King

Thirteen applications to serve on the committee were received by the town. The Council approved the recommendation of its Appointments Committee to appoint the seven citizens listed above. The Council also approved the committee's formal charge to review the repealed Mooring Ordinance and report back to the Town Council with recommendations within a year. "In doing so," the charge reads, "it may seek to answer three questions: One, does Winthrop need a mooring ordinance? Two, if so, what should the ordinance seek to accomplish? And three, what from the repealed ordinance should be retained, and what amendments should be incorporated?"

The committee will deliver a report of its findings to the Town Manager no later than Aug. 30, 2024. The committee will present its findings to the Town Council for its consideration at the Council’s next scheduled meeting following receipt of the committee’s report. The Council will consider either adopting the Committee’s recommendations as presented or calling for a special referendum election for voters to consider the recommendations.

The committee's meeting agendas will be posted on the Town's website and publicized. The meetings will be open to the public and broadcast on the Internet via Zoom, and the video posted afterward on the Town's YouTube channel. The video of the Council's July 24 discussion is posted at this link.
