Committee to focus on mooring field regulations

The Mooring Committee at its Oct. 19 meeting opted to focus on possible mooring field regulations after studying the results of a community survey that elicited 365 responses. Survey results can be viewed at winthropmaine.org/mooringsurveyresults

The survey found that 72% of respondents opposed the Town regulating moorings in front of lakefront property owners' shorelines. Opinions about regulating mooring fields was more evenly split -- 55% believed the Town should regulate mooring fields, 42% disagreed. The remaining 3% had no opinion.

The Town is soliciting information from other Maine municipalities about mooring field regulations, whether they are in the form of an ordinance or policy. That input will be discussed at the ad-hoc Mooring Committee's next meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Town Office, 17 Highland Ave. The meetings are open to the public. Residents may also attend via Zoom. The committee's agendas, which include the Zoom link, and recordings of its meetings, including the Oct. 19 gathering, are posted at winthropmaine.org/mooringcommittee.

The committee will deliver a report of its findings to the Town Manager no later than Aug. 30, 2024. The committee will present its findings to the Town Council for its consideration at the Council’s next scheduled meeting following receipt of the committee’s report. The Council will consider either adopting the Committee’s recommendations as presented or calling for a special referendum election for voters to consider the recommendations.
