Animal Control Officer

The responsibility of the Animal Control Officer for the Town of Winthrop is to protect the public from stray, sick, injured, abused, and unwanted animals. The ACO's duties include opportunities to rescue animals and prosecute individuals who abuse them. The ACO also is responsible to provide impounded animals with humane care at the shelter until they may be reunited with their owners. The ACO inspects kennels and other animal-related businesses to insure that animals are receiving adequate care. Additionally, the ACO responds to all animal complaints, cruelty complaints, issues citations, and seeks prosecution of people who violate Maine State laws and town ordinances concerning animals.

The ACO for the Town of Winthrop deals primarily with domestic animals. To report a lost dog or to make an animal complaint for a domestic animal, nondomestic or wild animal, please call the Winthrop Police Department at (207) 377-7226 or if it is an emergency Dial 911.

If your dog has been picked up by the ACO or a Winthrop Police Officer you may pick your dog up at the Kennebec Animal Shelter in Augusta after first providing proof of Rabies vaccination, license and payment of $25.00 transportation cost to the Winthrop Police Department at the Police Station, 15 Town Hall Lane. If your dog has previously been reported lost and if found, you may pick your dog up at the Winthrop Police Department Headquarters after first providing proof of Rabies vaccination, license and payment of a $15.00 impoundment fee for first offense, $25.00 for second offense, and $35.00 for third and subsequent offenses.
